Landed Cost for Small Retailers: Count More Than the Unit Price

About 2 min read

Calculator and notebook arranged with dollar bills

A wholesale unit price is only one part of the cost of putting an item on your shelf. Freight and other order charges can change the comparison between two quantities or suppliers. A landed-cost worksheet makes those differences visible before you commit to the purchase.

Build the order total

Start with the product quantity multiplied by the quoted unit price. Add shipping, any separately charged packaging or displays, and other applicable charges. Keep recoverable taxes or other accounting-specific treatments separate and check them with your accountant rather than assuming one treatment fits every business.

Divide by saleable units

For a simple planning comparison, divide the total costs you are assigning to the order by the number of units available for sale. If a shipment includes a demonstration unit that will not be sold, account for that choice consistently. Record which costs are included so two worksheets remain comparable.

Compare quantities in dollars as well as percentages

A larger pack may lower an average cost while tying up more cash overall. Write the full order total beside the per-unit figure. Consider how much stock you can display, store, and reasonably test. A lower unit price is not a demand forecast.

Keep the assumptions attached

Date the quote and record the shipping destination and included presentation option. For Just a Pinch, check the current listing for Product Packaging or Stands and confirm timing before ordering for a launch. Use the same cost basis when comparing margins later. This is an operational planning worksheet; your accounting records may classify individual costs differently.
